So, what types of pizzas can you cook in your air fryer? The only type that turns out good baked from frozen, fairly crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside: Latin American street style tortilla pizza.
Latin American street-style tortilla pizza tastes like nachos with veggies and creamy sour-cream sauce instead of salsa. You can add meat toppings to it if you want, but we try to eat less meat, so we use a vegetarian meatless version.
The tortilla pizza base is baked first for a few minutes to make it crispy, and then the veggies are added on top of it, after which it is decorated with sauce, cheese, and any other toppings you want. The whole thing goes back into the air fryer until the cheese melts, and you can enjoy authentic Latin American street-style tortilla pizza.
- 1 package tortillas (we used Fajita sized flour tortillas).
- 2 cups grated cheddar or mozzarella cheese (equals to about 8 oz. or 250g).

- Remove from the air fryer and spread the sour-cream sauce evenly over the top (or use salsa as a dip instead), then add grated cheese of any kind you like. Well, the answer is that pizza in oven and pizza in air fryer are two different things (technically).
When we think about pizza, most of us mean a basic pizza recipe with dough, cheese, and tomatoes sauce (if it’s a pizza Margherita). That means this is the pizza version 1.0, you could say.
Now when we compare pizza in oven and pizza in air fryer (version 2.0, if you will), we need to know what makes them different:
Pizza dough made for 200 °F (~100 °C) temperature is not going to turn crispy just by putting it into your 177-204 °F (~80-95°C) air fryer.
So, pizza dough needs to be crispy on the outside but still moist and chewy inside. Pizza in oven can’t do that; pizza in air fryer can.
For pizza Margherita, you need pizza sauce with water/onion/tomatoes/parsley/salt, etc., then put cheese on top of it (mozzarella or Parmesan, etc.). By putting pizza Margherita into your 193-375 °F (~90-190 °C) oven, you will end up with soggy pizza dough because of all the water from the tomato sauce combined with high-temperature steam. But if you put pizza Margherita into your 177-204 °F (~80-95 °C) air fryer, pizza dough will be crispy because of lower steam humidity.
So pizza in oven can’t do what pizza in air fryer does. Pizza in oven is closer to pizza Margherita version 2.0, while pizza in air fryer is close to pizza Margherita version 3.0 if you will.

An air fryer is a great choice for heating pizza because pizza made from scratch takes a while (~30 minutes), and the end result isn’t necessarily better than what you’re going to get from a pizza place.
