In a kitchen, the main risk is mixing volume systems without noticing. A gallon is a volume measure, so it belongs with jugs, pitchers, stock pots, brine buckets, and liquid ingredient orders.

US and Imperial Gallons
The chart for this article uses the US liquid gallon. That is the gallon a cook should assume for American recipes, supermarket milk jugs, stock containers, brines, drink batches, and most online recipes written with US customary measures.
An Imperial gallon is larger than a US gallon. It appears in older British recipes, some Commonwealth sources, and occasional brewing or preserving notes. If you convert it with a US gallon chart, the batch will come out short.
That difference matters most in recipes where liquid volume controls strength or texture. Brine can become too salty, cordial can taste too strong, soup can reduce too far, and batter can thicken before it cooks properly.
For everyday cooking, identify the source before converting. If the recipe says cups, fluid ounces, quarts, or comes from an American site, treat the gallon as US. If it says Imperial, UK, or comes from an older British source, pause.
Do not fix an Imperial-gallon recipe by guessing. Use a source that states the Imperial-to-litre conversion, or convert from smaller measures given in the same recipe. Guessing is risky because the error grows with batch size.
Labels can also mislead. A container sold in litres may be compared with a recipe written in gallons. Match the recipe system first, then measure the liquid you actually pour, preferably in a jug marked in litres.
