Across those rows confectioners sugar is the lightest at 113 g to the cup and honey the heaviest at 340 g, a spread of 3.01 times. That spread is the whole reason a cup figure means nothing until the ingredient is named.
A pound gives 4.01 cups of confectioners sugar but only 1.33 cups of honey. Measuring one by the cup when the recipe meant the other puts the batch out by that whole margin.
The rows are level cups. Two cooks who fill the cup differently will land on different weights from the same row, and neither of them is misreading it.
What the answer depends on
Age and storage move it a little. Anything that has taken on moisture sitting open weighs more per cup than the same ingredient fresh from a sealed bag.
Where a recipe disagrees with the chart, follow the recipe — the writer measured, the chart calculated.

How to measure this accurately
The same cup of the same ingredient can vary by a fifth depending only on how it got into the cup. Nothing about the ingredient changed; only the air trapped in it did.

If the recipe is going to be scaled, keep the decimal until after the scaling. Rounding first and multiplying afterwards multiplies the error along with everything else.
The mistake that shows up most
Reading a weight instruction as a volume one. A recipe asking for 8 ounces of flour means 8 ounces on a scale, not one cup. Read as a cup, it puts almost double the flour in the bowl and the dough never comes right.
Packing the cup without meaning to. Dipping the cup into the bag is the natural motion and the one that adds the most weight; spooning in and levelling is the measure every recipe assumes.

Measuring something warm. Fats and syrups both flow and pack differently at room temperature than straight from the fridge, and the cup figure assumes room temperature.
Halving a weight but not the volume it was converted from. Once a recipe mixes the two kinds of measure, scaling has to be done on one of them and converted afterwards.

Shopping is where this bites first. Packets are labelled in one unit and the recipe calls for another, and 1 cup is 4.23 ounces is the sum standing between the two.

Nothing about the ratio changes with the size of the batch, which is what makes scaling safe here.

Store flour in a container you can stir before measuring. Flour from a full bag may be tightly packed from shipping. Flour in a loose bin may be aerated. The chart works best when your handling is steady.

Set the measuring cup on the counter or hold it steady over the container. Spoon flour into the cup gently. Do not press, tap, shake, or drag the cup through the flour. Each of those actions can pack in extra flour.
Keep spooning until the flour rises above the rim. The top should look heaped and uneven. That is correct. You want enough flour in the cup before levelling, so the final surface reaches the rim without gaps.
Use the straight back of a knife, spatula, or bench scraper to level the flour. Draw it across the rim in one smooth pass. Let the excess fall away. Do not push down while levelling.

Another mistake is shaking the cup to flatten the top. Shaking settles flour into empty spaces. The surface looks tidy, but the measure becomes heavier. Level with a straight edge instead.

Scoop Method Weight Difference
The scoop method means dipping the measuring cup straight into the flour bag or tub, then sweeping the top level. It feels quick and tidy, but it packs flour into the cup before the excess is removed.
That packing is the problem. Flour is a powder with air between the particles. Pushing the cup through it squeezes out some of that air, so the same cup holds more flour by weight.
A cook sees the difference in the dough before seeing it on a scale. Cookie dough may turn stiff. Cake batter may look pasty instead of loose. Bread dough may need extra liquid and still bake up dense.
The error gets worse in deep containers. The flour at the bottom is already compressed by the flour above it. Dragging a cup through that layer adds even more compaction.

If a family recipe was developed with scooped flour, switching methods can change the result. The recipe may suddenly seem too wet because it was relying on the extra flour from a packed cup.
In that case, keep the method consistent while you test. Make the recipe once as written, note the texture, then adjust by weight later. Do not change the measuring method and the liquid at the same time.
Scooping is most risky for recipes with little margin for error: shortbread, pastry, muffins, cakes, and thick cookies. A small surplus of flour can make them dry, tough, crumbly, or domed.
For sauces, dredging, or dusting a work surface, the scoop method matters less. Those uses are adjusted by sight and feel. For measured baking, it matters because the cup is standing in for a scale.
The practical rule is simple: if the flour amount affects structure, do not scoop from the container. Loosen, spoon, level, or weigh. That keeps the chart useful and keeps the recipe from drifting heavier than intended.

If the dough looks slightly dry or wet after weighing, check the recipe before adjusting. Eggs, butter temperature, humidity, and mixing time can change texture. The flour weight is usually not the first thing to correct.
